Future Agro Challenge supports agro visionaries, farmers, manufacturers, and distributors from countries across several continents. Exciting innovations are disrupting the status quo. The Future Agro Challenge celebrates passion and ideas by creating an environment to showcase transformative innovations and inspiring entrepreneurs.

The most promising innovators are selected from the national winners to compete in the Global Championships. Innovators have the opportunity to participate in sessions and hot discussions on the latest entrepreneurship trends & best practices, network with entrepreneurs, investors, startups, policy makers & stakeholders from all over the world and claim the title of “Agribusiness of the Year”!

Future Agro Challenge is now an international ecosystem beyond its Global Championships that supports visionaries who bring forth solutions for socioeconomic growth and entrepreneurship in local communities, as well as, regional and global markets. FAC seeks ideas to advance Agtech, Agriculture Production and Processing, Nutrition & Health, Agriculture Biotech, Biofuels, Evergreen Practices, Robotics and Precision Agriculture, Agro Logistics, Farmer Incomes, Education, Agrotourism, Safety & Health, and Packaging.

Future Agro Challenge addresses the future of healthy food from the farmer to the consumer, and furthers the agricultural revolution that is underway.

Main Categories

• Agtech: technological innovation in our agriculture system
• Agriculture Production and Processing: the cultivation of animals, plants and fungi for food, fiber, biofuel, medicinal and other products used to sustain and enhance human life
• Nutrition and health: Presenting the consumers with attractive options of nutrition. Introducing food diversity and addressing the global challenge of an increasing world population.
• Agriculture Biotech: a range of tools, including traditional breeding techniques, that alter living organisms, or parts of organisms, to make or modify products; improve plants or animals; or develop microorganisms for specific agricultural uses
• Biofuels: A biofuel is a fuel that is produced through contemporary biological processes, such as agriculture and anaerobic digestion, rather than a fuel produced by geological processes such as those involved in the formation of fossil fuels, such as coal and petroleum, from prehistoric biological matter.
• Evergreen Practices: Innovative farming practices developed to address global challenges. Precision agriculture, reduction of energy and water consumption,technologies and processes in freshwater management, renewable energy technologies, alternative fertilizers, reduction in greenhouse gases, alternatives to the use of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers, preservation of biodiversity*, and effective use of arable land.
• Robotics and Precision Agriculture: Precision agriculture (PA) or satellite farming or site specific crop management (SSCM) is a farmingmanagement concept based on observing, measuring and responding to inter and intra-field variability in crops.
• Agro Logistics: From farm to fork, the improvement of the storage and transport of agricultural products. Ingenious solutions to reducing post harvest waste, preserving nutritional value and enabling wider access to consumers.
• Farmer Incomes: Ideas that improve crop production, cultivate alternative uses of natural products and by-products, reduce post harvest waste, increase food security, and new agro business management tools.
• Education: Programs and tools that contribute to the agro revolution, particularly in innovative thinking, encouraging sustainable practices, and awareness of environmentally sound methods.
• Agro tourism: Innovative ways in drawing visitors to an agro business, in the form of nature travel. Offering visitors the opportunity to participate in trend-making farm and ranch activities, and so promote rural vacations, nutritional awareness, and active lifestyles.
• Safety & Health: Products or practices that improve the health of farm and production workers, or consumers.
• Packaging: Designs that attract consumers, apply biodegradable materials and other solutions in agricultural products and equipment.
• Other: Those ideas that do not fit into the above categories but still positively impact agri business.

Current agricultural processes produce greenhouse gases, including the enteric fermentation in ruminant animals, methane emissions from rice fields, and release of soil carbon through motorized tilling and fertilizer use. Agricultural soils fertilized with nitrogen emit nitrous oxide. The mining and application of phosphorus as a fertilizer impacts freshwater ecosystems. Nitrogen and phosphorus encourage plant life in marine and freshwater systems respectively, unbalancing the dissolved oxygen available for aquatic life. Modern agricultural practices can disrupt the unique ecosystem of bacteria, fungi and other microorganisms present in the soil, and so deplete the land of biodiversity.

Who can apply

In order to participate, startups need to meet the following criteria:

• Exists no longer than 5 years
• Be proficient in the English language
• Have a scalable and innovative business idea or model

Judging Criteria

• Idea / concept: idea clearly explained
• Pitching skills: persuasive and capturing presenting of idea
• Innovation: breakthrough in idea, business model, or design
• Scalability: does this business idea have a market potential globally or regionally. What is the capability of creating job positions
• Health: a healthy process for production or consumption
• Design: innovative in design

Timeline

• Friday, January 13th, 2017: Startup applications close
• January 20th, 2017: International finalists announced
• March 15th, 2017: Global Championships in Johannesburg, South Africa
