Biological Sciences: KESS II Funded PhD Studentships: Evaluating the scientific and technical capacities towards sustainable production of sea vegetables in Milford Haven

Swansea University is a UK top 30 institution for research excellence (Research Excellence Framework 2014), and has been named Welsh University of the Year 2017 by The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide.

Milford Haven is the largest trust port in Wales, and is situated within the Pembrokeshire SAC, who is responsible for enforcing the EU Habitats Directive. The Milford Haven Port Authority (MHPA) aspires to transform the traditional ‘high carbon’ economy into new ‘low carbon’ economy by developing sustainable aquaculture in the waterway and surrounding grounds. Successful and sustainable aquaculture requires rigorous scientific and technological research to solutions for food security and diversification of businesses on the one hand, and prevention of ecosystem impacts on the other.

The overarching goal of the proposed research is to balance aquaculture production and conservation needs within the Port. The student will investigate and evaluate the scientific and technological feasibility of seaweed aquaculture within the Port. This project will blend field surveys, controlled lab and field trials, with regular knowledge-exchange with the MHPA and other stakeholders.

Scholarships are collaborative awards with external partners including SME’s and micro companies, as well as public and third sector organisations. The scholarship provides 3 years of funding with a 6 month period to complete the thesis. The achievement of a postgraduate skills development award, PSDA, is compulsory for each KESS II scholar and is based on a 60 credit award.

Eligibility

Essential Criteria

Candidates should have a 2.1 or above in their undergraduate degree in Marine Biology, Marine Ecology, Aquaculture, or a related subject. They should also be eligible for UK/EU Fees (see http://www.ukcisa.org.uk/Information--Advice/Fees-and-Money/Wales-fee-status for more information)

Desirable Criteria

• previous experience in aquaculture of seaweeds and filter feeders (e.g. bivalves)
• a general understanding of Integrated Multi Trophic Aquaculture
• previous experience dealing with businesses

Funding

The studentship covers the full cost of UK/EU tuition fees, plus a stipend. The bursary will be limited to a maximum of £14,198 p.a. dependent upon the applicant's financial circumstances assessed in section C point 4 in the KESS II Participant Proposal Form. 

There will also be additional funds available for research expenses.
