For the academic year 2018-2019, the Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA) is offering scholarships for Southeast Asians. These scholarships are available for (MS and PhD) in Agriculture and related fields at participating universities.

The Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA) is a non-profit organization established by the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO).

SEARCA envisions to meet contemporary development challenges and provide leadership in enabling an environment for sustainable agricultural and rural development (ARD) in Southeast Asia.

Applicants should have 550 TOEFL score for paper-based and 213 TOEFL score for computer-based) or IELTS results (6.0). The TOEFL results must be issued by Princeton, New Jersey, USA.

Course Level: Scholarship is available for pursuing master’s and PhD programme at any of the following universities, as well as those that have institutional arrangements with SEARCA, may serve as study posts of SEARCA MS and PhD scholars:Bogor Agricultural University (IPB), Bogor, IndonesiaGadjah Mada University (UGM), Yogyakarta, IndonesiaUniversiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Selangor, MalaysiaKasetsart University (KU), Bangkok, ThailandUniversity of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB), Laguna, Philippines

Study Subject: Agriculture and related sciences (including biological sciences, fishery, environmental science, statistics, forestry and social sciences)

List for Subjects: Thesis/Dissertation-With the Tenth Five Year Plan as guide, the graduate scholars’ thesis/dissertation topics must fall within any of the following ISARD priority themes and focus areas:

  • Social Inclusion
  • Strengthening of Value Chains and Agribusiness Commodity Systems
  • Integration of small-scale farmers into commercial food systems
  • Food and Nutrition Security
  • Productivity-enhancing innovations and modern technologies
  • Rural entrepreneurship toward off-farm and non-farm businesses
  • Environmental Sustainability
  • Climate change adaptation and resiliency
  • Natural Resource Management
  • Cross-cutting Concerns
  • Sub-regional cooperation in trade and investments
  • Regional Economic Integration (AFTA and AEC 2015)
  • Government Policies, Institutions, and Governance Mechanisms/Reforms that can address and redress rural poverty, inequitable growth, and environmental degradation

Scholarship Award: Scholarship covers stipend, tuition, international and domestic travel allowances, thesis/dissertation support, book allowance, and health insurance.

Scholarship can be taken in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Philippines

Eligibility: The SEARCA graduate scholarship is open to nationals of Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste and Vietnam who are regular employees of academic, research or government institutions and not more than 35 years old at the time of application.

Nationality: Scholarship is open to nationals of Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste and Vietnam.

PhD Scholarships

How to Apply: Interested parties may submit their accomplished SEARCA scholarship application form together with other original application requirements to the Ministries of Education/Higher Education of their respective countries. Applications may be submitted to any one of the following ministries of the applicant’s own country to any one of the following ministries of his/her own country: Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Forestry, Ministry of Fisheries and Ministry of Rural Development.

Each applicant is required to submit the following documents:

  • SEARCA Scholarship Application Form (2 copies);
  • Letter of admission/acceptance from SEARCA-accredited university is highly preferred. In none, applicants must submit accomplished application forms for admission to the Graduate School of the universities where the applicant may pursue graduate studies under SEARCA scholarship;
  • Official transcript of academic records of each degree completed (BS transcript for MS applicants and BS and MS transcripts for PhD applicants);
  • Certification of employment;
  • Brief description of the research the applicant plans to conduct for thesis/dissertation.The research topic must be in line with any of the strategic thrusts of SEARCA’s Tenth Five-Year Plan, namely Social Inclusion, Environmental Sustainability or Cross-cutting Concerns.
  • Two copies of passport-size pictures of the applicant;
  • Curriculum vitae;
  • Certification from a medical doctor that the applicant is in good physical and mental health condition and is fit to undertake graduate studies;
  • Official endorsement from the employer; and
  • Results of Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): score of 550 for paper-based and 213 for computer-based) or IELTS results (6.0). The TOEFL results must be issued by Princeton, New Jersey, USA.
