Applications are invited for Erasmus Mundus scholarships available to applicants from all nationalities. These scholarships are awarded for 18-months MSc programme in Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology at the Institute for Advanced Study of Pavia (IUSS), the University of Patras, the University of Grenoble 1 “Joseph Fourier” and the Middle East Technical University.

The MEEES programme is an Erasmus Mundus Masters Course, that aims to provide higher-level education in the field of Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology.

Three types of scholarships are available within the scope of the MEEES programme: Category A Scholarships, Category B Scholarships and Consortium Scholarship. For the 2017-2018 edition there will be Erasmus+ scholarships available for students from: Partner Countries (non-EEA students, formerly known as Category A) and Programme Countries (EEA students, formerly known as Category B). Students from a Partner Country may not have carried out their main activities (studies, training, work) or not have been residents in one of the Programme Countries for more than 12 months in the past 5 years. If this 12-month rule applies to applicant, they may only apply to a Programme Country scholarship (formerly Cat B).

To be eligible for a scholarship directly sponsored by the European Commission, i.e. a Category A or a Category B Scholarships, the scholarship holder must study in countries different form the country in which he/she has obtained his/her last university degree.

Course Level: Scholarships are available for pursuing MSc programmes at the Institute for Advanced Study of Pavia (IUSS), the University of Patras, the University of Grenoble 1 “Joseph Fourier” and the Middle East Technical University.

  • MSc in Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology (18 months): 15,000€ (Euro)It is also worth noting that students are expected to make use of the scholarship to cover for tuition fees, living expenses and travelling costs (necessary to reach the Institutions of study). In other words, all incurred costs are under the direct responsibility of the student.Consortium Scholarship:
  • MSc in Earthquake Engineering (18 months): 15,000€ (Euro)
  • MSc in Engineering Seismology (18 months): 15,000€ (Euro)

Eligibility: The minimum requirement in order to apply for the MEEES programme is a University Degree, preferably in Civil Engineering. Past professional experience will be valued. Admission to the course depends on academic qualifications, past professional experience and English proficiency.

  • The Category A Scholarship: This is available to third-country applicants. In order to qualify as a third-country national, applicants must:
  • Not be a national from any of the EU Member States: Germany, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Denmark, Spain, Finland, France, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, the UK, Sweden, Cyprus, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Czech Republic, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia.
  • Not be a national from Turkey, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) or Switzerland.
  • Not be a national from any of the EEA-EFTA states: Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway.
  • Not be a resident on any of the above countries.
  • Not have carried out their main activities (studies, training, work, etc.) for more than a total of 12 months over the last five years (until 28 February 2014) in any of the above countriesIt is noted that for the 2017/2018 Academic Year dedicated geografical windows were opened by the European Commission which will allow students to apply for dedicated Category A Scholarships. These windows are: Western Balkans window (Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia and Kosovo – this designation is without prejudice to positions on status, and is in line with UNSCR 1244 and the I?J Opinion on the Kosovo Declaration of Independence) and Syria window
  • The Category B scholarship:  This is open to applicants who are not eligible to the Category A scholarship. For the 2014/2015 Academic Year a dedicated geografical window was opened by the European Commission to allow students to apply for dedicated Category B Scholarships. This window is: former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) and Turkey window.
  • The Consortium scholarship: This is open to students of any nationality, without exceptions. To be eligible for a scholarship directly sponsored by the European Commission, i.e. a Category A or a Category B Scholarships, the scholarship holder must study in countries different form the country in which he/she has obtained his/her last university degree. This means e.g. that a student who obtained his/her last degree in Italy is not allowed to study at the UME School if he/she is receiving a Category A or a Category B scholarship.

College Admission Requirement

Entrance Requirement: The minimum requirement in order to apply for the MEEES programme is a University Degree, preferrably in Civil Engineering, that will enable the applicant to be admitted to a PhD programme in the country where the degree was obtained. Past professional experience will be valued.

English Language Requirement: With regards to English proficiency, applicants are asked to submit any documents that attest that they possess an adequate command of the English language. Such documents may consist of:

  • A score of at least 88 (internet-based exam), 230 (computer-based exam), 570 (paper-based exam) in the TOEFL test.
  • A score of 6 or more obtained with IELTS.
  • A degree obtained in an English speaking environment.
  • Other test scores that may be regarded as equivalent to those listed above.For enrolment at METU Ankara, a minimum score of 6.5 (IETLS) or 79 (TOEFL) is mandatory.

Nationality: Scholarships are available to applicants from all nationalities.

In order to complete the application form, applicant must upload the following documents:

  • Curriculum vitae e studiorum.
  • Copy of the diploma certificate (in Italian or English).
  • Transcript of the attended courses and professional qualifications (in Italian or English).
  • Copy of the passport or the identity card.
  • English language test certificate (or waiver referring to previous courses, work experience in English speaking countries, etc…).
