The Swedish Institute is now accepting applications for the 2018/2019 Swedish Institute Study Scholarships (SISS). Through SISS, they will grant about 180 scholarships for higher education in Sweden. The scholarships will be available for full-time master’s studies in Sweden starting in the autumn semester 2018. Usually 1-2 % of the applicants can be awarded a SISS scholarship.

Scholarship

• Tuition fees
• Living expenses of SEK 9,000/month
• Travel grant of SEK 15,000 *
• Insurance against illness and accident
• Membership of the SI Network for Future Global Leaders (NFGL)– a platform to grow your network and experience, while in Sweden
• Membership of the SI Alumni Network after your scholarship period – a platform for further professional development and to stay in touch

* The travel grant is a one-time payment for the entire scholarship period. The grant is not applicable to students already living in Sweden.

The scholarship does not cover:

• Additional grants for family members.
• Application fee to University Admissions.

Eligibility

• You must have minimum of 3,000 hours of demonstrated full-time or part-time employment, voluntary work, paid/unpaid internship, and/or position of trust.
• You must have demonstrated leadership experience from employment, voluntary work, and/or internship after high school studies.
• You must be required to pay tuition fees to the universities, have followed the steps of university admission, and will be admitted to one of the eligible master’s programmes by 6 April 2018.
• There are also criteria regarding dual citizenships, previous residence and studies in Sweden, and more.
• To be eligible for Swedish Institute Study Scholarships (SISS), you must be a citizen of a SISS-eligible country, and have sufficient documented proof of work and leadership experience.

The Swedish Institute Study Scholarships (SISS) aims at diversity and gender equality among scholarship holders. They welcome applicants regardless of age or religious beliefs.

Eligible Countries

Citizens of about 140 countries are eligible for the scholarship programme.

• Category 1 – about 50 scholarships will be available for citizens of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Burkina-Faso, Cambodia, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Ethiopia, Kenya, Liberia, Mali, Mozambique, Myanmar (Burma), Rwanda, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
• Category 2 – about 60 scholarships will be available for citizens of Brazil, Colombia, Egypt, Ghana, Indonesia, Iran and Vietnam.
• Special initiative – up to 10 scholarships will be available for citizens of South Africa in connection with the Binational Commission agreement between Sweden and South Africa. Citizens of South Africa should apply within the Swedish Institute Study Scholarships for South Africa, since the eligibility criteria and application procedure are different for this special initiative.
• Category 3 – about 60 scholarships will be available for citizens of countries on the DAC list of ODA recipients other than the above mentioned and those countries included in other SI scholarship programmes. There is no quota set for any specific country.

Regardless of country, you are not eligible for the SI Study Scholarships if you:

• have already resided in Sweden for cumulatively two years or more, prior to the scholarship period (August 2018);
• have a Swedish or EU/EEA citizenship, a Swedish permanent residence permit or a temporary work- and residence permit based on work or on family ties with a citizen of Sweden/EU/EEA country who has a temporary or permanent right of residence in Sweden;
• have previously been awarded a Swedish Institute scholarship for master’s level studies or research at a Swedish university/university college;
• already hold a degree from a Swedish university/university college;
• are currently enrolled in a study programme at a Swedish university/university college; or
• have a dual citizenship from countries not listed on the DAC list of ODA recipients.

Application

1. To begin with, apply for up to four master’s programmes at universityadmissions.se, between 16 October 2017 – 15 January 2018. About 550 master’s programmes taught in English will be eligible for SISS. They will publish a list of eligible master’s programmes for the academic year 2018/2019 here by 1 December 2017
2. Then apply for an SI scholarship between 2-9 February 2018, follow the instructions below.

An estimated 180 scholarships will be available for full-time master’s studies in Sweden starting in the autumn semester 2018. Usually 1-2 % of the applicants can be awarded a SISS scholarship.

Regarding the university application, you must also:

• be required to pay the tuition fee according to the information at University Admissions. Kindly contact University Admissions directly regarding questions related to application and tuition fee.
• have paid the application fee for master’s programmes at University Admissions on time before 1 February 2018.
• be admitted (including conditionally admitted) to one of the eligible master’s programmes by 6 April 2018. If you are listed as reserve, you will not be considered for an SI scholarship. There are no scholarships available for late admissions. We will publish a list of eligible master’s programmes for the academic year 2018/2019 here by 1 December 2017.
