The Max Planck-Harvard Research Center for the Archaeoscience of the Ancient Mediterranean is offering 5-year fully-funded PhD fellowships for study and research on the science of the human past. International applicants are eligible to apply for these fellowships.

The aim of the fellowships is to fully finance international students to study in the USA.

The creation Max Planck Harvard research centre for the Archaeoscience of the Ancient Mediterranean was announced in February 2017 at Harvard University. The centre is a collaboration between The Max Plank Institute for the Science of Human History (MPISHH) and the Initiative for the Science of the Human Past at Harvard (SoHP). The centres co-directors are Michael McCormick (History Department, Harvard University, and chair SoHP), David Reich (Department of Genetics, Harvard University), Johannes Krause (MPISHH) and Philipp Stockhammer (MPISHH and LMU Munich).

Course Level: Fellowships are available to pursue PhD program.

Study Subject: Fellowships are awarded for study and research on the science of the human past.

PhD degrees have been or will be awarded through Harvard University, notably in the following departments:

• The Archaeology Program within the Anthropology Department
• History
• Human Evolutionary Biology
• Organismic and Evolutionary Biology
• Additional Departments Forthcoming

Scholarship Award: This is a fully funded fellowship.

Number of Scholarships: MHAAM is expecting to offer up to three 5-year fully-funded PhD fellowships for study and research on the science of the human past.

Eligibility: The following criteria must be met in order for applicants to be eligible for the scholarship:

• Candidates for the Fellowship must apply for admission to one of these Harvard University PhD Programs to be considered eligible for this full funding opportunity through the Max Planck-Harvard collaboration.
• GSAS welcomes applications for admission from individuals who have or will have by the time of matriculation a BA, BS, or equivalent undergraduate degree (for prospective international students, a three- or four-year undergraduate degree from an institution of recognized standing) and actively seeks applicants from groups historically underrepresented in graduate schools. All degree candidates are admitted for full-time study beginning in the fall term.
• GSAS enables PhD students to coordinate their studies for an additional advanced degree. If you are planning a career in biomedical research and academic medicine and would like to earn an MD and a Ph.D., visit the Harvard-MIT MD/PhD program for more information. The JD/PhD. The program enables students to study for a JD at Harvard Law School and a PhD in economics, government, history, and health policy departments of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences.
• If you already hold a PhD or its equivalent or are an advanced doctoral candidate at another institution, you may apply to a PhD program only if it is in an unrelated field of study; however, preference for admissions and financial aid will be given to those who have not already had an opportunity to study for a doctoral degree at Harvard or elsewhere. You may also want to consider pursuing non-degree study through our Special Student or Visiting Fellow programs.
• Eligible Harvard College students with advanced standing may apply in the fall of their junior year to earn an AM or SM degree during their final year of undergraduate study. Interested students must contact the Office of Undergraduate Education for eligibility details before applying.

College Admission Requirement

Entrance Requirements: Applicants must have their previous degree.

English Language Requirements: Adequate command of spoken and written English is essential to success in graduate study at Harvard. Applicants who are non-native English speakers and who received their undergraduate degree from an academic institution where English is not the primary language of instruction must take the Internet-based test (iBT) of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). A minimum score of 80 is required, but some programs may require a higher score. Applicants who took the TOEFL more than two years ago (i.e. before September 1, 2016, for fall 2018 admission) must retake the test. No test other than the iBT TOEFL will be accepted as proof of English proficiency; a master’s degree is not accepted as proof of English proficiency.
