TRAINING WORKSHOP FOR TOUR GUIDES ON

BIODIVERSITY VALUES OF HA LONG BAY AND CAT BA ARCHIPELAGO  

Cat Ba, 26-27 August 2017

 

Time & venue: 

  • Workshop day in Cat Ba National Park: 8:30 – 17:00hrs, Saturday 26th August 2017
  • Field trip in Cat Ba Island: 8:00 – 15:30hrs, Sunday 27th August 2017

Objectives: through tour guides, raise awareness of tourists about biodiversity values of Ha Long Bay and Cat Ba Archipelago (HLB-CBA). 

Trainers:  

The lead trainer, Dr. Jaap J. Vermeulen is one of the world leading experts on biodiversity of karst ecosystems. He got PhD. in Plant Taxonomy and MSc. in Structural Geology and Stratigraphy/Palaeontology from University of Leiden, The Netherlands. He has 35 years of experience working on biodiversity and tropical karst areas in Southeast Asia, taxonomy (orchids, terrestrial molluscs) and Natural History collection management. 

The training also has the support of other experts on hospitality and responsible tourism – MSc. Kai Marcus Schröter, General Director of HTM Management Consultancy Co., Ltd. and IUCN Vietnam specialists – Mr. Nguyen Duc Tu and MSc. Nguyen Thi Bich Hien.

Target participants: Vietnamese tour guides work for travel agents, Ha Long Bay Management Board and Cat Ba National Park and are interested in environment and biodiversity (about 30 participants).

Language: English with interpretation to Vietnamese

Training contents: participants will be equipped with basic knowledge about:

  • Key concepts and terminologies about biodiversity
  • Karst processes - Origins & history of the Cat Ba Archipelago - Ha Long Bay karst - environmental setting of the CBA – HLB karst.
  • CBA/HLB karst development - Karst environment & evolution - Karst endemic species
  • Legal framework on biodiversity conservation in Vietnam and internationally
  • Impacts of tourism on the ecosystem and environment in Ha Long – Cat Ba and roles of tour guides in conserving ecosystem values and services in Ha Long and Cat Ba

Only selected participants will be contacted through email by August 16th, 2017 

Budget: IUCN will cover costs of trainers, meeting venue package (room, coffee breaks and lunch) during the training, a reception dinner on August 26th and transportation for the field practice on August 27th, 2017. 

Participants shall arrange and cover on their own costs related to their travel, accommodation and other personal expenses during the training days.
