Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), a worldwide ministry of Anabaptist churches, shares God’s love and compassion for all in the name of Christ by responding to basic human needs and working for peace and justice. In Vietnam, MCC is working to bring about sustainable improvements among ethnic minorities and people living with the effects of Agent Orange, by partnering to enact projects improving early childhood education, sustainable agricultural practices, conflict transformation practices, quality therapeutic care, and livelihoods.

MCC is looking for a motivated and enthusiastic communicator to fill the following position:

Communications Officer

This position is a fulltime position with a one year annually renewable contract, based in Hanoi, requiring occasional domestic travel.

 

The Position:

The Communications Officer will collaborate with the MCC Vietnam team to ensure clear and accurate communication, written and spoken, in a variety of contexts (including but not limited to: various levels of government, non-governmental organizations, international visitors) with a primary focus on exchange programs and learning tours.

The Communications Office will report directly to MCC’s Representatives to Vietnam and work in close collaboration with the MCC Vietnam office team. The Communications Officer will have a primary focus, but should be ready to work on different initiatives within the country program. He/She is expected to start with a high capacity for communicating language and local culture, and to gain knowledge and experience working with an international non-governmental organization.

Representatives to Vietnam

 

Responsibilities:

-  Ensure smooth communication related to exchange programs: between MCC, host community, sponsor, and participant; also between MCC Vietnam, sending community, participant, and receiving community

-  Provide regular support for host communities and sponsors related to cultural adjustment of foreign exchange participants

-  Provide logistical support for Learning Tours (including but not limited to: making travel arrangements, obtaining necessary permissions in a timely fashion, translating for participants, acting as a cultural reference)

-  Document and translate stories for use in MCC reporting

-  Translate documents (English to Vietnamese and Vietnamese to English)

-  Assist with preparations of visa and residency related documents for MCC Vietnam international personnel

-  Consult local partners regarding places for non-Vietnamese participants to serve and methods for selecting Vietnamese participants to send abroad.

-  Ensure clear communication and common understanding of Learning Tour goals and objectives through effective pre-arrival communication, in-country orientation, dialogue throughout, and follow-up communication with participants.

-  Function as an active member of the MCC Vietnam team through regular reporting, team meetings and retreats, visiting nearby MCC sites in Vietnam, and providing mutual care and support for other MCC team members.

-  Other duties as assigned.

 

 Experience and Knowledge:

- Demonstrated commitment to relationship building and storytelling as peacebuilding practices

-  Near-native English language fluency

-  Native Vietnamese language fluency

-  Experience translating documents between Vietnamese and English

-  Experience live-translating for English speaking visitors to Vietnam

-  Experience building relationships cross-culturally and/or in a cross-cultural setting

-  Participated in an international exchange experience of one or more years (IVEP or YAMEN preferred)

-  Demonstrated ability to relate with persons of different faiths and political viewpoints, and to listen with patience and respect to those with whom one does not agree

-  Experience using various mediums and media to document stories highlighting potential and ongoing peacebuilding opportunities to a broad constituency/readership

-  Ability to work in a semi-structured job assignment

-  Willingness and ability to work within team settings, willingness to learn from others and be responsible and accountable to MCC Vietnam policies and team decisions

-  Administrative, organizational, and supervisory skills

-  Experience working with an international non-governmental organization

 

Compensation: Compensation will be commensurate with experience and include medical benefits, severance pay, national insurance, and a lunch allowance for the employment period.
