Dear Friends,  

When I decided to return to Vietnam to start ViGIC project after 5 years abroad, I did it because I’ve always wanted to contribute to my country where my skills and experience could be leveraged. So, I took a leap of faith as I wanted to make a real difference, and the one-year journey so far has been exciting and rewarding to say the least. In modern society, people often notice such social problems as domestic violence, corruption, pollution - the dark side of life. In contrast, as a guy who always looks on the bright side, I never lose hopes on the future of my country Vietnam: dynamic, passionate and talented young people who thrive themselves on being global citizens.  

As technology startups become the primary growth engine of the new economy, recent development of startup ecosystems all around the world will have an inevitable impact on the global market and hence the future of Vietnam’s own.

The message is important and urgent: technology is making the world borderless and advancing rapidly; if Vietnamese entrepreneurs don’t leverage it to grow and scale their ventures quickly, global competitors will take our market share away. We have the talent, resources and public/private support to do this. There is no reason why Vietnam cannot rise above and put ourselves on the global map.  

In fact, in the past year, we have seen ‘Flappy Bird’ phenomenon, Gotlt app and its vision to be a unicorn startup and rapid development of major corporations such as FPT, VNG. These companies have won high praise for bringing about a four-digit number of job opportunities annually. With the spirit of creative start-ups is spreading strongly, we want to bring together the abundant resources from partners and communities, to promote ecosystem of startup in Vietnam, so that we could enhance Vietnam’s position on the map of global startup.  

There’s no magic formula to build a vibrant startup ecosystem that leverages the strengths of our country, and we’re certainly not trying to emulate Silicon Valley. Rather, just like a startup itself, a healthy and sustainable ecosystem in a developing nation can only be created through a series of informed experiments, (some of which may fail and some of which succeed) that leads to eventual success. The ability to produce a critical mass of Vietnamese startups that have achieved product-market-fit at a regional or global level will be a yardstick that our organization’s success will be measured upon.  

We know that our work has just begun and we cannot do this alone.  

Among those people who are passive and timid, I believe that many of you are boiling inside that "I need to do something for my country" but actually do not know where to start or to go with. If that is you, join our core team, and we will set up the first foundations for this innovative ecosystem!
