The Master in Digital Communication Leadership (DCLead) approaches the vast and recent field of digital communication from an interdisciplinary and international point of view bringing together advanced academic discussion with practical knowledge and skills. The programme promotes a non-techno-deterministic, social and ethical reflection on digital communication for future leaders of the field.

DC Lead is also offered in collaboration with the following academic partners:

  • University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), United States
  • Ghana Telecom University College (GTUC), Ghana
  • Universidade Federal do Recôncavo da Bahia, Bresil
  • Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Australia
  • Journalism School at Fudan University, China

And the following industry partners:

  • Teracom A/S, Denmark
  • Discovery Communications Inc.
  • the European Broadcasting Union (EBU)
  • Red Bull Media House GmbH, Austria

All courses are held in English.

The leadership-approach of this curriculum encompasses economic-managerial, technological and media and communication knowledge with social responsibility and ethical-cultural dimensions of digital communication.

The ability to combine these dimensions, to think together economy and social aspects, technology and culture, individual needs and society will be an indispensable precondition for future leaders in the field. The aim of the programme is to deepen and broaden this knowledge and to provide an arena for innovative ideas and discussions as well as a profound preparatory basis for future fields of employment in the area of digital communication.

The MSc in Digital Communication Leadership is awarded to the students that obtain 120 ECTS credits, including 30 for their master thesis. These credits are earned by successfully passing the examinations of the various courses and modules.

The MSc (Master in Science) in Digital Communication Leadership is jointly awarded by Paris-Lodron University of Salzburg (PLUS) and Aalborg University (AAU).
The MA (Master of Arts) in Digital Communication Leadership is jointly awarded by Paris-Lodron University of Salzburg (PLUS) and Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB).

 Benefits

  • Students will be expected to gain knowledge, competencies and skills, according to their chosen study track, in several of the following fields: (new) media policies, business and economics of (new) media, media management, service design, network and service development, innovation studies, political economy and a European perspective on those fields.
  • Erasmus+ Scholarships:
    • Only applicants who will submit all required documents will be eligible for consideration. The final decision lies with the Agency of Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA) of the European Union based on the evaluation provided by a selection committee of the DCLead consortium.
    • The following scholarships are awarded: Programme Countries E+ Scholarship grantees receive a stipend of 1000 EUR per month for the maximum duration of the 24 month, and 1.000 EUR per year for travel costs.
    • The grant also covers the participation costs.
    • Programme Countries are member states of the European Union (EU): Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom, and the following Non-EU programme countries: Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Turkey.
    • Partner Countries E+ Scholarship grantees receive a stipend of 1.000 EUR per month for the maximum duration of the 24 month, 1.000 or 3.000 EUR for travel costs depending on the distance of the home country to the coordinating university (University of Salzburg), and 1.000 EUR for installation costs. The grant also covers the participation costs. 
    • Partner countries are all the other countries that are not Programme Countries.

 Eligibilities

  • Required Academic Qualifications
    • An applicant for admission shall hold the equivalent of an academic bachelor’s degree from a recognized academic higher education institution, corresponding to at least 180 ECTS (6 semesters), or a Master’s degree.
    • Applicants for the Digital Communication, Policy and Innovation in Europe (track A), should have a Bachelor or Master degree in Mass Communication, Communications, Journalism or Media Studies. Candidates with a bachelor or master’s degree in Law, Sociology, Education, Translations or other social science disciplines must have gained competencies in the field of digital communication through work experience to be eligible.
    • Applicants for the Digital Technology and Management track (track B) must have a Bachelor or Master in Computer Science, Information Technology, or Software Engineering. Candidates with a bachelor or master’s degree in business administration with competencies in Information Technologies gained through work experience are also considered. Candidates with other bachelor or master’s degrees are not eligible.
    • Applicants for positions as self-funding students that do not have a Bachelor’s degree at the moment of the application, but, they are expected to be awarded a Bachelor’s degree before the start of the programme, are considered.
    • Applicants for an E+ Scholarship that do not have a Bachelor’s degree at the time of the submission of application are not eligible for the scholarship.
    • Furthermore, in judging whether a particular diploma or work experiences is relevant to the topic of the programme, the selection commission will take into consideration the motivation letter.
    • Prospective candidates should also note that Digital Marketing is a minor subject in the DCLead programme.
    • Candidates of all nationalities are eligible for Erasmus + Scholarship, although 75% of these scholarships are Partner Countries scholarships. Only applicants who will submit all required documents will be eligible for consideration.

APPLICATION PROCESS

  • The application procedure is divided into two phases: Application (Phase 1) and Registration (Phase 2). All candidates wishing to participate in the programme must carry out the tasks described in Phase 1.
  • Only candidates shortlisted for participation, after receiving a confirmation of their selection by email, can carry out the tasks described in Phase 2.
  • Note that if the documents provided for phase 2 provide any information that is different from the information provided during phase 1, the application will be immediately cancelled.
  • Providing a proof of English proficiency is recommended for Phase 1, particularly if a candidate applies for an E+ Scholarship. A fulfilment of the rules for the proof of English proficiency is mandatory for Phase 2.
  • In the first phase, candidates fill out the online application form and attach, where requested, a single PDF file of less than 50MB containing the following documents in the order specified here:
    • Curriculum Vitae (CV), based on the English template from the Europass website
    • A scan of the original university diploma(s), AND certified translation if the document is not issued in English or German.
    • A scan of the original (AND certified translation if the document is not issued in English or German) official transcript of study results from your university.
    • Original English test results, certificates or diplomas (see below the section about English proficiency). Students that are not in possession of a proof of English proficiency can simply indicate their level of expertise in the curriculum using the guidelines provided in the Europass template. Nonetheless, if selected, the proof of English proficiency is STRICTLY required prior to registration (hence, within 4-6 weeks from the notification of the selection’s result). Nonetheless, please note that the submission of a valid proof of English proficiency at the moment of the application is favourably valued by the commission.
    • A Motivation letter. In the letter, the candidate should explained how passed experiences have prepared him/her for participation in the master in digital communication leadership, how this programme is likely to improve his or her own career perspectives, and why the candidate is interested in the topic of digital communication leadership. The motivation letter should be:
      • Typed using a word processing software before saved as a PDF file
      • 6,000-10,000 characters long, including spaces
      • Types using a Times New Roman or Book Antiqua font size 12
      • Page size A4
      • Typed using a 1.5 space in-between lines
      • The title of the letter should be in BOLD and it should read Motivation Letter by (your name)
      • Pages should be numbered
      • Note that handwritten letters are NOT accepted. A letter shorter than the minimum requirement is accepted, yet it is likely to be a disadvantage for the candidate.
  • Two (minimum) or three (maximum) Recommendation Letters in English. The letters do not follow a template. The only requirement is that the contact details of the person providing the reference must be clearly typed and must contain a business email address [not a private one] and a telephone number. Referees that prefer to provide the letters directly to the programme’s administration, can email their letters to [email protected]. The people writing the recommendation letters can be also marked as referees in the application form. Referees are people who have collaborated with the candidate, which are willing to answer questions about her/him. One of these references should be an academic who has been a teacher or tutor of the candidate; other referees, can be from the professional experiences of the candidate. Please note that the referees must be able to communicate in English or German.
