Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Sweden is inviting applications for Swedish Institute Study Scholarships (SISS). Scholarships are awarded to students from selected countries for full-time master’s level studies in Sweden starting in the autumn semester 2018.

The goal is to enable the scholarship holders to play an active role in the positive development of the societies in which they live.

SISS is the Swedish government’s international awards scheme aimed at developing global leaders. It is funded by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Sweden and administered by the Swedish Institute (SI).

Applicants from outside the home country will often need to meet specific English language/other language requirements in order to be able to study there.

Scholarship Description:   

• Application deadline:  January 15, 2018
• Course Level: Scholarships are available for full-time master’s level studies at the Swedish Universities.
• Study Subject: Scholarships are awarded to study the subjects offered by the universities.
• Scholarship Award:  The scholarship covers
  • Tuition fees: directly paid to the Swedish university by us
  • Living expenses of SEK 9,000/month
  • Travel grant of SEK 15,000 *
  • Insurance against illness and accident
  • Membership of the SI Network for Future Global Leaders (NFGL)– a platform to grow your network and experience, while in Sweden
  • Membership of the SI Alumni Network after your scholarship period – a platform for further professional development and to stay in touch

  * The travel grant is a one-time payment for the entire scholarship period. The grant is not applicable to students already living in Sweden.

• Number of Scholarships: An estimated 180 scholarships will be available for full-time master’s studies in Sweden starting in the autumn semester 2018. Usually 1-2 % of the applicants can be awarded a SISS scholarship.

  • Category 1 – about 50 scholarships will be available for citizens of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Burkina-Faso, Cambodia, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Ethiopia, Kenya, Liberia, Mali, Mozambique, Myanmar (Burma), Rwanda, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
  • Category 2 – about 60 scholarships will be available for citizens of Brazil, Colombia, Egypt, Ghana, Indonesia, Iran and Vietnam.
  • Special initiative – up to 10 scholarships will be available for citizens of South Africa in connection with the Binational Commission agreement between Sweden and South Africa. Citizens of South Africa should apply within the Swedish Institute Study Scholarships for South Africa, since the eligibility criteria and application procedure are different for this special initiative.
  • Category 3 – about 60 scholarships will be available for citizens of countries on the DAC list of ODA recipients other than the above mentioned and those countries included in other SI scholarship programmes. There is no quota set for any specific country.
• Entrance Requirements:  The Swedish Institute Study Scholarships (SISS) aims at diversity. Institute welcomes applicants regardless of age, gender or religious beliefs. Applicants must come from a SISS-eligible country, and show proof of work and leadership experience. Scholarships will only be granted to candidates who have followed the steps of the university admission and been admitted to one of the eligible master programmes in Sweden. The programme is open to three different categories of countries. Approximately 100 scholarships within each category will be available.
• English Language Requirements: In order to be eligible for university studies in Sweden, a student must demonstrate that they meet the English requirements for the course or programme.

Application Procedure:

Regarding the university application, you must also:

• be required to pay the tuition fee according to the information at University Admissions. Kindly contact University Admissions directly regarding questions related to application and tuition fee.
• have paid the application fee for master’s programmes at University Admissions on time before 1 February 2018.
• be admitted (including conditionally admitted) to one of the eligible master’s programmes by 6 April 2018. If you are listed as reserve, you will not be considered for an SI scholarship. There are no scholarships available for late admissions. We will publish a list of eligible master’s programmes for the academic year 2018/2019 here by 1 December 2017.

How to Apply: 

Apply for a master’s programme at universityadmissions.se

• To begin with, apply for up to four eligible master’s programmes at universityadmissions.se by 15 January 2018.
• University Admissions is the national online application service which handles admissions to universities in Sweden. It is an independent agency not related to the Swedish Institute (SI). The eligibility and application procedure for SI scholarships and for university admissions are different.
• Only the master’s programmes that are in the list of master’s programmes are eligible for SISS. We will publish a list of eligible master’s programmes for the academic year 2018/2019 here by 1 December 2017.
• Once you have submitted your application to the master’s programme(s) at universityadmissions.se, you will get a personal application number consisting of seven or eight digits. Save the number as you will need it when applying to SISS.
• 1 February 2018: deadline for receipt of application fee and supporting documents that are required by University Admissions. The application fee is non-refundable.
• If you missed the deadlines or failed to follow the application procedure at University Admissions, you will not be eligible for an SI scholarship.

• Apply for an SI scholarship after you have completed your application to master’s programme(s). See more information about required documents and templates below.
• During the application period 2-9 February 2018, submit the required documents digitally through our online application portal.
• The online application portal is open from 2 February 2018 to 24:00 CET 9 February 2018. Link to the online application portal will be available on this page during the application period.

Due to the high volume of applications, the online application portal may be under heavy pressure at the end of the application period. We strongly urge all applicants not to wait until the last minute to apply.

Citizens of South Africa should apply within the Swedish Institute Study Scholarships for South Africa.
