Applications are invited for fully-funded PhD studentship at The Bournemouth University starting on January 2019 for 48 months. The PhD Studentships are open to UK, EU and international students.

While the PhD researcher will be based at Bournemouth University, there will be opportunities of internships at partner organisations (e.g. Nottingham, York, Ulster, Cambridge, Roehampton, Eduardo Mondlane), intended to enhance research capacity and skills and promote integration within the project.

The Bournemouth University (abbreviated BU) is a public university in Bournemouth, Dorset, England, with its main campus situated in neighboring Poole. Bournemouth University appeared for the first time in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings in 2015/16: it was ranked 401-500 (shared) in the world and, with a combined score of 30.0, reached the 57th position among UK universities.

Scholarship Description:

  • Applications Deadline: September 9, 2018
  • Course Level: Studentship is available to pursue PhD programme.
  • Study Subject: Studentship is awarded in Climate and human-related risks to coastal and maritime cultural heritage in eastern Africa.
  • Scholarship Award: This is a fully-funded PhD studentship which includes a stipend of £14,777 each year to support your living costs.
  • Nationality: The PhD Studentships are open to UK, EU and international students.
  • Number of ScholarshipsA total of nine PhD studentships are being offered by project partners to candidates from East Africa.
  • Scholarship can be taken in the UK

Eligibility for the Scholarship: 

Eligible Countries: The PhD Studentships are open to UK, EU and international students.

Entrance Requirements: Applicants must meet the following criteria:

A 1st class honours degree and/or a relevant Master’s degree with distinction or equivalent. If English is not your first language you’ll need IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5 minimum (with a minimum 6.0 in each component).

The PhD Studentships are open to UK, EU and international students. Candidates for a PhD Studentship should demonstrate outstanding qualities and be motivated to complete a PhD in 4 years and must demonstrate:

  • Preferably a 1st class honours degree and/or a relevant Master’s degree with distinction or equivalent.

In addition to satisfying minimum entry criteria, BU will look closely at the qualities, skills and background of each candidate and what they can bring to their chosen research project in order to ensure successful completion.

Applicants will be asked to submit an online application form and a proposal (approximately 1500 words) outlining their understanding of the project for which they are applying, the approach they would envisage taking and what qualities they will bring to the research community.

Preference will be given to high-quality proposals submitted by applicants based in Mozambique, Kenya, Tanzania or Madagascar with demonstrable experience in working in eastern Africa and knowledge about the region’s coast.

Please note:

Current BU Doctoral students are not eligible to apply for a Studentship
Current MRes/MPhil students can apply, subject to satisfactory completion of their Research Degree prior to being able to take up the award
PhD Studentships cannot be used to support BU staff to complete doctoral programmes

Additional Eligibility:
